Veel veranderd, maar toch vertrouwd

I’m revisiting my homeland this year, to continue work on the photo book of Somaliland and to start a tiny project in Maid. The photo book will be released around May 18, 2011, the 20th anniversary of Somaliland. I’m in the company of photographer and friend, Chantal Heijnen, just like last year.

It was nice to land in Berbera, for a change, up till now I always landed in Hargeisa. Lucky for us we were in the same plane as Mohamed Yunis Awale, Somaliland’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is familiar with the activities of SDS and was one of the participants in the debate on Somalila & Somaliland, That was organized by Lux Global in collaboration with SDO. He was so kind to arrange a comfortable ride for us from Berbera airport to the Ambassador Hotel in Hargeisa.

Ik bezoek dit jaar mijn geboorteland, om verder te werken aan het fotoboek over Somaliland en om een zeer kleinschalig project in Maid op te starten. Het fotoboek wordt uitgebracht rond 18 mei 2011, de 20ste verjaardag van Somaliland. Ook dit jaar reis ik weer met vriendin en fotografe Chantal Heijnen, alleen dit jaar verlaten we niet gelijktijdig Somaliland. Na het vertrek van Chantal, reis ik verder naar Erigavo en Maid.

Het was leuk om voor de verandering een keer in Berbera te landen, ipv Hargeisa. Wij hadden wel het geluk dat we in hetzelfde vliegtuig zaten als Mohamed Yunis Awale, de Somalilandse Staatssecretaris van Buitenlandse zaken. Hij is bekend met activiteiten van SDO en was een van de deelnemers aan het debat over Somalila & Somaliland, dat door Lux Global ism SDO werd georganiseerd. Hij was zo vriendelijk om ons op een zeer comfortabele wijze van het vliegveld in Berbera naar het Ambassador Hotel in Hargeisa te brengen.

Gedurende onze (korte) afwezigheid is veel in de stad Hargeisa (bij)gebouwd, zowel in het centrum als daarbuiten. De ontvangst hier was geweldig, alsof ik niet weg ben geweest. Het bezoeken van Somaliland buiten de zomer is erg fijn: heerlijk weer, niet zo warm, minder druk en goedkoper!
